When chopped onions, a popular hot dog condiment that had purportedly vanished during the pandemic, were brought back to the shelves of Costco in 2023, the retailer caused a commotion among its customers. According to Business Insider, the warehouse club decided to convert to providing tiny plastic cups of onions rather than enabling members to dispense the popular topping using the self-service “onion crank” that was available before to the implementation of COVID.
An individual who is a member of Costco and who posted on Reddit stated that this appears to have modified at one warehouse club.
The shopper took to the online platform this week to share a picture of the onion crank that was placed alongside an image that had a quotation from the animated film “How to Train Your Dragon 2.” It begins with the words “You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you.”
The member of Costco posted a discussion with the headline “The onion grinder is back!” and then reported in the comments that they had seen the dispenser in Riverton, Utah. “Up until very recently, it consisted of cups of onions,” they wrote.
Due of the fact that the onion crank is a food court amenity that is in high demand, members of Reddit were eager to react on its alleged reintroduction.
It’s a small world… One individual remarked, “I just finished eating a hotdog there two days ago, and I was amazed to see that the onion grinder had been brought back.”
“Nature is healing,” another person said in their response.
“I would appreciate it if you could expand this company,” said another individual.
During this time, several individuals voiced their dissatisfaction with the onion cups from the food court.
Lucky you! My Costco is going in the opposite direction…”During the past few years, I was able to purchase a full small container of onions. However, during my most recent visits, there were approximately ten pieces of onion in each cup,” the user revealed on Reddit.
“My location basically has cups of onion that’s almost never stocked 😔,” said one another individual.
Our inquiry to confirm the reappearance of the onion crank dispenser and to determine whether or not it will be offered at warehouse clubs across the country was not immediately responded to by Costco. With this in mind, consumers should continue to take the latest sighting with a grain of salt and continue to keep a watchful look out for it the next time they go to the food court.
This week has a number of new food court sightings, not the least of which is the return of the onion crank. It was brought to the attention of Reddit by a member of Costco that the ordering procedure for full pizzas has been modified in the food court.
At other Costco stores, the company asks its customers to place their pizza orders through digital kiosks and then wait for a worker to call out their ticket number when the food is ready to be picked up.
Nevertheless, the user of Reddit noted that their warehouse club had changed from utilizing the number-calling technique to asking consumers to make their order and stand in a line that was specifically designated for people picking up full pizzas.
The number of places that have adopted this adjustment is unknown; however, a member on Reddit stated that their warehouse in San Francisco “almost never had number calling.”
